Asheville
Playback Theatre was founded in 1995 in North Carolina,
USA, by Raphael Peter and Cat Gilliam. Now in its fifteenth
season, APT's public performances are all part of the
overall theme “Building a Community of Neighbors”.
|
In playback
theatre, personal stories from audience members will be transformed
into performance pieces, accompanied by improvised music.
As always with playback, the teller’s story will be
honored both as a personal event, and as a moment representing
our shared experience. In a playback gathering, it is not
unusual for audience members to exclaim “but this is
my story too!” Through sharing our local experiences,
the company hopes to create a meeting ground for the Asheville
community, a place where differences can be shared and better
understood.
During its 2009-2010 season,
APT will present a series of public performances in Asheville,
some at the BeBe Theatre at 20 Commerce Street,
and some at NC Stage, 15 Stage Lane, and
some at other locations noted below. Some have specific topics,
and others are wide open to all stories. For all shows (except
Nov. 15th, which is free, donations accepted), tickets will
be available at the door for $10 ($5 for children or students
with ID), with no one turned away for lack of funds (but we
do sometimes sell out, so come early).

APT extends
a special invitation to people who do not often attend live
theatre, people whose history or experience in Asheville is
not commonly shared, and people who are curious to meet new
neighbors and reach across some of the divides that exist
in our community.
This
season, we are continuing to offer a monthly workshop
in playback theatre techniques, held on the third Saturday
of each month from 10AM to 1PM at Harvest House, 205
Kenilworth Road in Asheville. The workshops are free
of charge, and all are invited to attend. The
first is planned for September 19, 2009.
Asheville
Playback Theatre is also available for private bookings.
Since our purpose is to honor people's real life experiences,
we have been hired for some of the following: business trainings
& team building conferences, social service organizations'
retreats, community building events, special occasions such
as birthday parties, anniversaries & holidays, and many
other venues. We can tailor our unique improvisational, story-based
theater to fit your specifications or needs.
